This occurred north of Austin, on a stretch of I-35 that is under construction (I-35 will be under construction forever). Initial word is that an oversize tractor trailer struck the span, causing a section to fall on the roadway. No word if the deceased was the truck driver or another motorist. They're trying to keep the highway open to motorists during construction, and this section is notoriously narrow and dangerous. ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

Damn. Wonder how long 35 is gonna be closed? I'm heading that way from Dallas very early tomorrow morning.

I'm in San Marcos... So I guess I'm stuck here

I-35 is shut down in both directions. It's going to be a nightmare for quite some time.

No idea. They'll have to do an investigation before they start removing the beams. At least they have the equipment already in place. And it looks like the crash occurred on the SB side. Might be a good day for a drive in the country, though there aren't many good ways south besides I-35. You cold bypass Salado on TX 95 at Temple, but I'll bet they are already using that as a detour, and traffic will SUCK. Good luck.

Hey, as long as it's better than being stuck in Seattle for 9 hours and not moving.

Seriously, on that stretch of highway, 9 hours might just be a conservative estimate.

I thought so too until I looked up how bad the traffic situation was in Seattle. Apparently, the entire city was on gridlock.
The crash caused gridlock that stalled evening rush-hour traffic for hours. Traffic slowed on surface streets and Interstate 5 through Seattle.
Some people stuck on buses decided to get off and walk. The Sounders game was delayed 20 minutes and there were reports that it was due to traffic delays. Witnesses reported seeing a goalie Stefan Frei running down the sidewalk to CenturyLink Field.

How on earth did that happen?...bridges on 35 all have ample clearance for 18 wheelers... Was this some massive oversized guy (don't see anyone oversized in the photos) or was this an engineering problem with the new bridge spans installed without proper clearance.?

I guess I'm facing a 30 min detour if it's still closed tomorrow morning. Looks like I can jump on 190 or zig zag my way to Florence and Liberty Hill on my way to Kerrville.
Somebody gonna pay for that cleanup!

35 is a perpetual headache. Getting past Salado was always a moment of relief because the rest of the way to Austin is mostly complete.

Never! There's always another faster route.

And 75 mph until Georgetown.

One news site is saying "it hit the bridge" and another is saying it was an oversize truck that hit the span. Not sure yet.

This morning I gave a stranger a lift to the bus station since he was about to miss his bus. I was one fast whiteboy.

And then in Georgetown you get on the toll road.... WHOOOOOOOOO DOGGY!

Only if you take it. It's 85, sure, but it swings so far to the east that there's really no time savings for the amount of money you spend. And honestly, it's really not a very well-made road. The city is trying to encourage the big rigs to take the toll road (SH 130), but they don't want to pay the toll. So they're thinking of reducing the toll for trucks. They really do need to get the rigs off of I-35 through downtown. There's a semi wreck at least once a week, and that's no exaggeration. If they had built a damned interstate instead of a toll road, it would have solved the problem. But I don't want to get started on the politics of it.

The toll road is pretty much only good for going to the airport. In fact the only time I've ever been on it was when we were driving home from the airport when we still lived in Temple.

That makes sense. The only smart thing they did was put the road close to the airport. Where I live, though, it makes no sense for me to take the toll road to go to the airport. It takes too long to get to it. I still take the interstate and surface streets. Ironically, the best way to get to the new Austin airport is still by taking Airport Blvd.
